A panel

from 28 countries has just bestowed the Land Rover Defender the 2021 World Car Design of the Year award. This is the sixth such award for the Jaguar Land Rover company, and no other manufacturer has won as many in the World Car Awards’ 17 year history.

The Land Rover Defender is an iconic nameplate in the automotive world. Few models can challenge its rough and tough persona; then again, not many other vehicles has been in as many war zones, conflicts, and natural tragedies. Yet, the 93 journalists (and seven design experts who first shortlisted the three finalists to also include the Honda e and Mazda MX30) didn’t solely appreciate the Defender’s pedigree. It’s not difficult to see why. The Defender effortlessly brought the soul of the Defender into the 21st century flawlessly, incorporating the vehicle’s key design cues particularly the unmistakable silhouette, generous wheel well, and boxy structure. Prof. Gerry McGovern OBE, Chief Creative Officer, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “New Defender is influenced by its past but is not constrained by it and we are delighted it has been honoured with this award.” Customers get to choose between three interior colour combinations with scope for personalisation. The upholstery varies according to variant, starting from textile to leather for the higher variants (of course). There are also options for combined use with durable textile, the latter incorporating other materials including recycled polyester, suede, and wool. Previous cars from Jaguar Land Rover which has won the World Car Design of the Year award includes the Jaguar I-PACE (2019), Range Rover Velar (2018), Jaguar F-PACE (2017), Jaguar F-TYPE (2013), and Range Rover Evoque (2012).
